UK Container Capacity Build-Out Accelerates at London Gateway and Southampton
DP World has begun receiving four of Europe’s largest quay cranes for London Gateway and Southampton. The investment lands as official UK data show container traffic still growing even while total port tonnage falls.
Air Cargo Tightens Into Peak Season as European Demand Rises and Capacity Falls
IATA says European air cargo demand rose 4.1% year on year in August while capacity fell 3.5%, pushing the cargo load factor to 53.0%. For UK shippers, the Q4 peak is starting with less slack on important air-freight lanes.
EU ETS Maritime: 30 September Deadline Meets Higher Q4 Carbon Surcharges
Shipping companies must surrender allowances covering 70% of verified 2025 maritime CO₂ emissions by 30 September 2026. At the same time, Q4 carrier emissions surcharges are resetting against a higher EUA reference price — a practical cost signal for UK–EU and North Europe freight.
Sevington and Holyhead Customs Changes: What UK–EU Freight Teams Need to Prepare for in 2027
From early 2027, customs checks and transit services now handled at Sevington and Holyhead are expected to move closer to the border. Freight operators should review transit workflows, authorised consignor/consignee options and port-specific procedures before the change takes effect.
UK–EU Freight Signal: Exports Rebound, but Demand Stays Mixed
UK goods exports to the EU rose sharply in July 2026 and UK manufacturing output also improved, but imports from the EU fell and EU industrial production weakened. For freight planners, the signal is positive but not broad-based.
UK Container Traffic Rises 12% as Total Port Tonnage Falls
UK major ports handled less freight tonnage overall in Q2 2026, but container traffic moved in the opposite direction. Container units rose 12% year on year, London reached a record quarterly container tonnage, and current ocean-freight indicators suggest shippers still need to plan carefully around capacity and schedule reliability.
UK–EU SPS Agreement: Logistics Operators Should Start Preparing Now
The UK–EU SPS agreement is moving from negotiation into business-readiness planning. For hauliers, freight forwarders and customs intermediaries, the practical message is clear: map affected supply chains now, while the detailed operating rules are still being finalised.
